 Who Requires a VISA

All foreigners from non-commonwealth countries are required to have a valid visa unless their countries have visa abolition agreement with Tanzania. Exceptions: Citizens of Commonwealth countries are not required to obtain visa, unless they are citizens of the United Kingdom, Canada, Nigeria, India, Pakistan or The Republic of South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Citizens of the United States of America are issued a multiple entry visa (tourist and business) valid for one year. However, the list may change from time to time.

Visa for children Under 18 years of Age 

Children applying for visa and travelling alone or with another person other than their parents, a written consent of the parent is required including their birth certificates.

Types of VISA

There are five types of visas valid for entry into Tanzania:

A. Ordinary Visa

An Ordinary Visa: is issued for the purpose to enter Tanzania for tourist, holiday, family visits or any other activity legally recognized by the law. It is issued at any Tanzania Mission abroad or at any official entry point into Tanzania boarder.

An Ordinary Visa is issued for the purpose to enter Tanzania for tourist, holiday, family visits or any other activity legally recognized by the law. It is issued at any Tanzania Mission abroad or at any official entry point into Tanzania boarder. 

B: Student Entry Visa:

Requirements are similar to ordinary visa, however a letter of invitation from the contact Institution in Tanzania should be attached to the application. If student will be doing research a Research Permit is required. It is also advisable to have a letter of introduction from host institution if student will be conducting interviews and taking pictures.

C: Business & Meeting Visa:

Business visa is issued to persons for the purpose of temporarily conducting business, feasibility studies, trade, meeting, professional or temporary assignment.

The Embassy requires a letter of invitation from their business contact in Tanzania or a cover letter from established company/organization/institution they are working for to introduce the applicant and nature of the trip. This should be sent in along with the application

This type of visa is valid for 90 days and can not be extended while in Tanzania. 

Entry to Tanzania for purposes of employment, long term studies, voluntary work or any other not related to above types of visa, a Resident and Work Permit is required.

D. Multiple entry Visa:

Foreigners who, because of the nature of their family ties need to make frequent visits to Tanzania may be issued with Multiple- entry visa. Multiple entry visa is valid for six months or one year.

E: Transit Visa:

This is a permission to pass through Tanzania from one entry point to the exit point. It is for the people whose purpose of their entry into Tanzania is simply to pass through to the other destination abroad without visiting. This type of visa is only issued to persons with onward tickets, sufficient funds for transit, and an entry visa to the country of destination or any proof that prior arrangements have been made that satisfy this requirement. Application requirements are similar to ordinary visa.

F: Referral visa

These are some countries which their nationals require entry visa permission from the Director of Immigration Services or the assistant Director of Immigration Services in Tanzania prior to issuance of the visa. The following countries are required to apply for referred visa:

Abkhazia

Azerbaijan

Bangladesh

Chad

Djibouti

Ethiopia

Eritrea

Equatorial Guinea

Kazakhstan Republic

Kyigten Republic

Lebanon

Mali

Mauritania

Niger

Palestine

Senegal

Somalia

Sri Lanka

Somali land

Sierra Leone

Tajikistan

Turkmenistan and

Stateless persons or persons with refugee status

and any other nationalities as may be specified from time to time by the authorities

Persons in need of this type of visa may make enquiries at the Embassy. Decision to grant entry visa to referred visa applicant is made at the Immigration Headquarters in Dar es Salaam Tanzania. However, the application is forwarded by the Tanzania Embassy in Stockholm. Applicants are required to fill in visa application form and attach two passport photos, photocopies of the first and last pages of passport, invitation letters or introductory letters where applicable, proof of visa and postage fee payment.

The applicant is required to clearly state reason for entry to Tanzania, show his/her contacts in Tanzania and in Sweden. We highly recommend you not to buy any flight ticket until your visa is approved as the waiting time takes three months or more for such applications to be processed.

When the decision is made in Dar es Salaam, the Embassy in Stockholm will inform the applicant. If the decision is positive, the applicant is supposed to submit his/her original passport to the Embassy for stamping the visa permit.

Entry points

Entry points to the United Republic of Tanzania, i.e. Namanga, Tunduma, Sirari, Horohoro, Kigoma Port, Julius.K. Nyerere International Airport (JKNIA), Kilimanjaro International Airport, Zanzibar Harbour and Zanzibar International Airport (ZIA) and Other Gazzeted Entry Points.

1. Complete and sign a visa application form which you can download here:

2. Your application may be submitted by hand or by post (registered mail) together with your passport 

3. Your passport must have 6 months’ validity from the date of departure from Tanzania and must be in good                     condition

4. One recent passport sized photograph

5. Evidence of visa and postage fee.

6. Business, Meeting, Study and religious activities requires an invitation letter or a cover letter signed by the                   academic institution, company/organization you are working for confirming the purpose of the visit.

Visa fees (in SEK.) are as follows; 

Transit Visa                                                                                                        300.00

Ordinary Visa (Valid for 3 Months)                                                               500.00

Multiple Entry Visa (ordinary Visa valid for one year)                            1000.00

Business/Meeting/Conference Visa- Valid for Three Months               2500.00 

 (American Citizens are granted multiple entry visas valid for one year)

If you send your application by post, include a postage fee of SEK 90. Alternatively, you may send a self-addressed registered envelope. Your passport will be returned registered unless otherwise advised.

Above fees are for all ages and Nationals of all countries except citizens of the United States of America.
