Don't forget to look at the options on Mafia Island also if any of your party are serious divers or snorkellers; Mafia doesn't have the same quality of beaches … but it's a lot quieter than Zanzibar, and can have a much more exclusive feel for a similar cost.

Visa applicants are invited to drop their application form and passport at the Embassy in Stockholm or post by register. The Embassy can not process and issue visa using copies of passports. 

We wish to inform you that all payments should be made online/bank transfer into Embassy's Post Giro account and a receipt of payment must be attached to your applications from. Please add postage fee of SEK 120 for Sweden and SEK. 150 for all other countries.  Express service (granted on the same day) for visa is SEK. 200 on top of the normal visa fee. 

Applications without receipts for visa and postage fee payment and other attachments required depending on visa type, will not be attended.

Payments made within Sweden - Account Number (Plus Giro Nr.) 103 7471-8. Payments made outside Sweden, use Bank Identification Code (BIC/Swift) Address: NDEASESS and International Bank Account Number (IBAN): SE2895000099604210374718 (no space).

There has been a tendency to claim for refund when travellers change their mind on visa type, travel plans or application mode. The Embassy will no longer entertain such refunds and request visa applicants to make the right decision before paying.

RESIDENT AND WORK PERMIT

Who Requires a VISA

All foreigners from non-commonwealth countries are required to have a valid visa unless their countries have visa abolition agreement with Tanzania. Exceptions: Citizens of Commonwealth countries are not required to obtain visa, unless they are citizens of the United Kingdom, Canada, Nigeria, India, Pakistan or The Republic of South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Citizens of the United States of America are issued a multiple entry visa (tourist and business) valid for one year. However, the list may change from time to time.

Visa for children Under 18 years of Age 

Children applying for visa and travelling alone or with another person other than their parents, a written consent of the parent is required including their birth certificates.

Types of VISA

There are various types of visas valid for entry into Tanzania: All visa applicants must fill in the visa form, sign and attach one passport photo. additional attachments required depend on visa type. 

1: Ordinary Visa

An Ordinary Visa is issued to enter Tanzania for the purpose of;

  • tourism, holiday (Visa type A1),
  • visiting friends and family (Visa type A2). 

It is issued at any Tanzania Mission abroad or at any official entry point into Tanzania boarder. This type of visa is valid for 90 days and can be extended when you are in Tanzania.

2: Student Entry Visa:

Requirements are similar to ordinary visa, however a letter of invitation from the contact Institution in Tanzania should be attached to the application. If student will be doing research a Research Permit is required. It is also advisable to have a letter of introduction from host institution if student will be conducting interviews and taking pictures. This is Type C1 visa valid for 90 days. It is issued at any Tanzania Mission abroad or at any official entry point into Tanzania boarder and can be extended when you are in Tanzania.

3: Business & Meeting Visa:

Business visa (Type B visa) is issued to persons for the purpose of temporarily conducting business, feasibility studies, trade, meeting, professional or temporary assignment.

The Embassy requires a letter of invitation from their business contact in Tanzania or a cover letter from established company/organization/institution they are working for to introduce the applicant and nature of the trip. This should be sent in along with the application

This type of visa is valid for 90 days. It is issued at any Tanzania Mission abroad or at any official entry point into Tanzania boarder and can not be extended while in Tanzania. 

Entry to Tanzania for purposes of employment, long term studies, voluntary or missionary work or any other not related to above types of visa, a Resident and Work Permit is  required. Applicants must communicate with their hosts/ employers in Tanzania for permit applications.

4: Multiple entry Visa:

Foreigners who, because of the nature of their family ties need to make frequent visits to Tanzania may be issued with Multiple- entry visa. Multiple entry visa is valid for one year. This type of visa can now be issued at the Embassy for Americans for ordinary entries and for persons intending to conduct business, trade and meetings. A permit has to be given by the Immigrationn headquarters to issue this visa. Therefore applications must be submitted one month before travelling. Please attach proof of business, employment or reason for multiple entry to Tanzania.

5: Double Entry Visa

The Embassy can no longer issue this type of Visa.

6: Transit Visa (one/same day):

This is a permission to pass through Tanzania from one entry point to the exit point (visa type F). It is for the people whose purpose of their entry into Tanzania is simply to pass through to the other destination abroad without visiting. This type of visa is only issued to persons with onward tickets, sufficient funds for transit, and an entry visa to the country of destination or any proof that prior arrangements have been made that satisfy this requirement. Application requirements are similar to ordinary visa.

7: Gratis visa

Diplomatic/Official passport holders and Laissez-passer holders of the UN, SADC, AU and other International Organizations recognized by the United Republic of Tanzania will be granted gratis visa if they are travelling on official duties (must show evidence). When travelling on unofficial capacity, they are subject to pay prescribed fees when using  Lassez-passer or their National passports. It is issued at any Tanzania Mission abroad or at any official entry point into Tanzania boarder.

8. Other Types

  • This can be for various reasons or any other activity legally recognized by the law.other than types listed above (Type C4),
  • Health/treatment (Type Cs),
  • Official (Visa type E),
  • Diplomatic (Visa Type D)  

 It is issued at any Tanzania Mission abroad or at any official entry point into Tanzania boarder.

9: Referral visa

These are some countries which their nationals require entry visa permission from the Director of Immigration Services or the assistant Director of Immigration Services in Tanzania prior to issuance of the visa. The following countries are required to apply for referred visa:

Abkhazia
Azerbaijan
Bangladesh
Chad
Djibouti
Ethiopia
Eritrea
Equatorial Guinea
Kazakhstan Republic
Kyigten Republic
Lebanon
Mali
Mauritania
Niger
Palestine
Senegal
Somalia
Sri Lanka
Somali land
Sierra Leone
Tajikistan
Turkmenistan and
Stateless persons or persons with refugee status
and any other nationalities as may be specified from time to time by the authorities

This type of visa is not issued directly by a Tanzania Mission abroad or at any official entry point into Tanzania boarder.

Persons in need of this type of visa may make enquiries at the Embassy. Decision to grant entry visa to referred visa applicants is made at the Immigration Headquarters in Dar es Salaam Tanzania. However, the application is forwarded by the Tanzania Embassy in Stockholm.

Applicants for Referral Visa are required to fill in visa application form ((word) (pdf)) and attach;

  • Invitation letter from host person/ institution and introductory letters from employer if it is a business related visit.
  • two passport photos,
  • photocopies of their passport 
  • Copy of passport or ID of host person or profile of Institution
  • Copy of resident permit of applicant where applicable.
  • Hotel booking/ or any other confirmation of accommodation - with clear address
  • Copy of travel booking (not ticket)
  • Contacts/Address of Host( House number, street name and telephone numbers  

Applicants for Referral Visa are required to clearly state reason for entry to Tanzania, show his/her contacts in Tanzania and in Sweden. We highly recommend not to buy any flight ticket, confirm appointments or make advance booking payments in Tanzania until your visa is approved. The waiting time for approval is three months or more for such applications to be processed. When the decision is made in Dar es Salaam, the Embassy in Stockholm will inform the applicant. If the decision is positive, the applicant is supposed to pay for visa fee and to submit his/her original passport to the Embassy for stamping the visa permit This type of visa is valid for 90 days

Entry points

Entry points to the United Republic of Tanzania, i.e. Namanga, Tunduma, Sirari, Horohoro, Kigoma Port, Julius.K. Nyerere International Airport (JKNIA), Kilimanjaro International Airport, Zanzibar Harbour and Zanzibar International Airport (ZIA) and Other Gazzeted Entry Points.

VISA Application Procedures 

Ensure to send your duly filled application (the form must be properly filled.. no gaps) with a receipt of fee payment, passport and one colour passport size (3.5x4.5cm) real photograph. Take into consideration your travel date and post delivery time from you to us. The Embassy takes three days to process the visa application. Express service (granted on the same day) for visa is SEK. 200 on top of the normal visa fee. 

  • Attach with a clip, not glue one recent passport photo (3.5x4.5 cm)
  • Visa applications forms and passports can be submitted in person/by hand or registered post. If you send your application by post, include a postage fee of SEK 120 for Sweden and 150 for other countries. Your passport will be returned registered unless otherwise advised.
  • The Passport must have 6 (six) months validity from the date of departure from Tanzania.
  • Single entry visa: Entry permit for tourists, friends and family visa is valid for three (3) months. Application for extensions can only be made in Tanzania.
  • Business Visa: A letter from an established company will be required to introduce the applicant, the nature of the trip and the business contact in Tanzania. Business and meeting/conference visa is valid for three months and cannot be extended while in Tanzania.
  • The Embassy can no longer issue double entry visas

VISA Fees

Visa fees (in SEK.) are as follows; 

SEK 500.00 for single entry visa - tourist, student, visiting relatives (valid for 3 months from the date of issue). 

SEK 2500.00 for Business visa (valid for 3 months from the date of issue and can not be extended).

SEK 1000.00 for Multiple Visa (valid for one year from the date of issue. Application and required attachments to be submitted one month before travelling - permit has to be given by the Immigration Headquarters) 

American Citizens are granted multiple entry visas valid for one year SEK. 1000.00

SEK 300.00 Transit  Visa

Above fees are for all ages and Nationals of all countries except Pakistan. Visa applicants who are Nationals of Pakistan will pay SEK 2000.00 for ordinary Visa and must inquire for relevant visa fee on other types of visa during application. 

Fee must be paid in advance to our Bank (NORDEA) Account Number (Plus Giro Nr.) 103 7471-8 (for paying customers within Sweden). Payments made outside Sweden, applicants can use the following Bank Identification Code (BIC/Swift) Address: NDEASESS and International Bank Account Number (IBAN): SE2895000099604210374718 (no space).

Receipt must be attached to the application and must show names of applicants (Please note. Visa payment is non refundable. Please make right decision before paying)

Above fees are for all ages and Nationals of all countries except citizens of the United States of America.
