On his last day in Tanzania, President Clinton became one of 360, 000 visitors annually to explore the World Famous Ngorongoro Crater. Often called "Africa’s Eden" and the "8th Natural Wonder of the World," this collapsed volcano (a “caldera”) is located in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area . This is a natural sanctuary for thousands of birds, insects and animals such as lions, zebra, black rhino and wildebeest, all free to wander.

 Tax Rights and Obligations to Tanzanian Diaspora

The Embassy has observed that Diasporas and NGOS working in Tanzania frequently send inquiries regarding tax payments and tax exemptions for goods sent to Tanzania.

TRA has issued a booklet that explains the current procedures. The booklet  provides information on:

  • The type of goods which are allowed in free of duty,
  • institutions which are eligible,
  • How to avoid delays in clearance and
  • The application of the regulations for cross border imports from Kenya or Uganda.

This booklet is titled "Tax Rights and Obligations to Tanzanian Diaspora" which was published in March 2010. More details on tax issues and import dutied for different kinds of goods is available on the TRA website

TRA requests Tanzanian Diasporas and others importing goods for charity work to observe the following;

  • The necessary documentation (for e.g. bill of lading, or Airway Bill, packing list, Invoices and valuation sheet) is sent well in advance of the shipment arriving in Dar es Salaam. Forms are accessible on the website to enable this process to be
    done on line.
  • It is essential to use a registered Import agency to handle the process. A list of approved agents is available on TRA website.
  • Goods "exempted" from paying import duty - does not mean importation is entirely  free. It means that the Government of Tanzania will pay TRA on behalf of the charitable organisation. The law therefore requires that the TRA receive a fund transfer from the Treasury equivalent to the duty payable if it were a commercial import (TVC System). This process is supposed to be completed in 48 hours but often takes more than 3 weeks.
  • There are similar exemption procedures for local purchase of goods for NGOs.
  • The rules apply across the East Africa Customs Union.
